How a video downloader actually works

From the outside a downloader looks like one button. Underneath, four distinct steps run in sequence, and knowing them makes error messages far easier to interpret.

Step 1 — reading the link

The URL is parsed to identify the platform and the unique post identifier. Anything that does not match a known pattern is rejected here, which is why a profile link fails instantly.

Step 2 — resolving the media

The service asks the platform for the publicly available renditions of that post: the different resolutions, the audio track, and the thumbnail. If the post is private, nothing comes back.

Step 3 — presenting the options

The available renditions are grouped into readable labels such as HD 1080p or Audio, so you pick a file rather than a raw stream address.

Step 4 — delivering the file

The chosen file is streamed through the site with a header that tells your browser to save rather than play it. This is also the step that lets the site avoid exposing raw upstream addresses, which is better for both privacy and security.
