Building an offline video library before a trip

Streaming apps are unreliable on planes, in tunnels and on rural roads. A small offline library prepared the night before removes the problem entirely.

Plan the storage first

Decide how many hours you need, then work backwards: roughly 2 GB per hour at 1080p, or about 1 GB at 720p. For a long flight, 720p is usually the better trade between quality and space.

Organise as you go

  1. Create one folder per trip so cleanup afterwards is a single delete
  2. Rename files as you save them — default names are unreadable a week later
  3. Save audio-only versions of talk content to stretch your storage further
  4. Check one file plays before you leave, not at the gate

Battery matters more than you think

Playing a local file uses noticeably less battery than streaming, because the radio stays idle. Offline viewing is often the difference between arriving with 30% charge and arriving with none.
